Hitit University Publishes Its 2024 Sustainability Report
The Hitit University Sustainability Office has published its "2024 Sustainability Report," covering the university's activities from January 1 to December 31, 2024. The report documents the university's practices in education, research, social contribution, and corporate governance in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In the report's foreword, Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Öztürk stated that they view sustainability as a core part of their institutional mission. He emphasized that the university's specialization in "Machinery and Manufacturing Technologies" provides tangible contributions to the industrial aspect of the green transition, particularly in areas like clean production and material efficiency.
The report indicates that Hitit University's sustainability policy is based on the "One Health" approach, which treats environmental, human, and animal health as an interconnected, holistic system.
Highlights from the Report
The university's sustainability strategy focuses on four main areas: Research , Governance and Operations , Social Contribution , and Education and Training. Some key data from the report include:
Energy and Campus: The university's Trigeneration and Cogeneration systems have a total power capacity of 1.6 MW/h. Additionally, a rooftop solar panel system project with a 1 MW/h capacity is in the feasibility and project phase.
Water and Waste Management: The proportion of water-efficient equipment (faucets and cisterns) across the campus has reached 85%. Within the "Zero Waste" project, 6 "Zero Waste Certificates" were received , and a 12% reduction in organic waste was achieved in 2024.
Research: In 2024, 265 academic publications on sustainability were published. The total budget of projects initiated in 2024, funded by institutions such as the EU, USA-NIH, and TÜBİTAK, exceeded 1.2 million Euros.
Accessibility: Hitit University has received "Accessible Flag" awards from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and was also awarded the "Barrier-Free Program Medal," which was granted to only three universities.
Social Contribution: 650 students received free meal benefits in 2024. In the same year, women constituted 52% of total student enrollment and 60% of graduates.
2025 Targets
The report also includes targets for 2025. These targets include strengthening "zero waste" policies according to the hierarchy of prevention, reduction, reuse, and recycling ; transforming the Disabled Student Unit into an "Accessible Student Unit" ; and integrating a sustainability impact assessment into all new investments and programs.
